Mathematical modeling of tech-related real-world problems for secondary school-level mathematics

Abstract The use of authentic real-world problems that reflect the applied nature mathematics is not prevalent in formal secondary school settings. In this study, we explore interface between workplace mathematics, particularly tech-related (TRW) problems, and through explication mathematical modeling. research questions are (1) which tech domains can be identified addressed using modeling for level? (2) Which methods do engineers to simplify non-experts their field? (3) areas curriculum TRW mapped? We present a three-phase model yielded creation pool 169 problems. first two phases included extracting from work simplifying them meaningful or perceivable students. These were explored by conducting task-oriented interviews with senior scientists leading companies universities. third phase was accomplished interviewing education experts, verifying compatibility formal, secondary-level curriculum. study has methodological, theoretical, practical contributions. include methodology enables identifying compliant curriculum; adding literature about demonstrating mathematics; creating large used math lessons.
